Allison

Bowls of food lined the counter in the kitchen. Allison wiped the folding tables. Jaden followed with silverware and festive napkins. The plates sat piled near the food.

“Let’s get the little ones fed first,” Mary called. Mothers led the youngest children to the counter and helped with adding food to the plates. Older children followed. They giggled as they took turns.

“Gotta love a good smorgasbord,” Riley leaned over and whispered in Allison’s ear.

She grinned.

He let her go in front of him at the end of the line and then followed her to the only remaining empty seats. Several pair of eyes watched curiously.

He thought about reaching out and touching her, just to give those enquiring minds something to think about, but held back. This was something that he would do for Will.

He turned his head to look around the room. Where was Will?

The back door opened. Megan stepped inside. She slid off her jacket and hung it on the hook by the back door. When she turned back to the room, her eyes landed on Riley and a flush crept onto her cheeks. She looked at the floor before straightening her back and walking to the counter where she filled a plate.

She carried it across the room and sat on the sofa, balancing the plate on her knees.

“Where’s Will?” Riley called across the room.

She became busy moving food around her plate. “I don’t know.” She shrugged, but didn’t raise her face. “Jensen came and picked up that Peters guy an hour and a half ago.” She turned to Allison. “Jensen said to tell you that he’d be out tomorrow to go over the gas rationing rules. And, if things go well, in about a week, we should also have a couple grocery deliveries and there will be rationing books for those as well.”

The room fell silent before everyone began talking at once. “Finally!” Mary crossed her hands over her breasts. “Thank you, God! They are starting to pull us out of the stone age!”

“Yeah, if Phillips doesn’t block deliveries and come after the rest of us,” Rolly muttered.

The room got silent as people resumed eating.

Riley turned back to Megan. “What was Will doing after that Peters guy left?”

Her fork clattered to the floor. She picked it up.

“What’s your problem?” she snapped.

Riley cringed. “I’m sorry. I’ll finish my food here and fix him a plate.”

“Good idea.” She bent over her plate, letting her straight hair provide a curtain in front of her face.

“Leave your plate here,” Allison said when he’d eaten his last bite and leaned back in his chair. “Go fix Will a plate and take it to him.”

“Thanks.” He pushed back his chair and went to the counter where he piled a plate with ham, green beans and mashed potatoes.

Will was bent over the table. He stared at a map of Illinois. He smiled when he looked up and saw the plate that Riley carried. “Thanks, man.”

“What are we looking at?” Riley asked.

“The route to Springfield. Looks like it will be Highway 26 as far as Peoria and then I-74 for a few miles before we pick up I-155.
